If you have ever experienced a Shabbat dinner, you know that veggies are a big part of the dinner. And you also have probably been told since you were a kid that you have to eat your veggies. This is a simple vegetable side that can be used for everything from a Shabbat dinner to a classy date night and even just cooking at home for one.


  • 2 stalks of broccoli (generally two stalks can serve 2-3 people)
  • 1/2 Tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp cumin
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 cups of water


  1. Pour two cups of water into a pot and bring it to a boil.
  2. While the water is coming to a boil, cut the broccoli up.
  3. Pour the broccoli into the pot of boiling water and turn the heat down.
  4. Stir around and let sit and cook for 7-10 minutes (The reason for this is it both makes the broccoli cook nicer with the spices, and it makes the broccoli less tough when it comes time to eat).
  5. Using a colander, pour out the water and keep the broccoli.
  6. Spray pan with non-stick spray and turn on the burner.
  7. Put broccoli into the pan.
  8. Combine the spices with the broccoli and continue mixing until it starts to get a little dark.

All totaled, this takes maybe 20-25 minuets at most from start to finish. Why it’s good for college students: It’s simple but classy. Broccoli is good and it’s a great way to make sure you eat your veggies. It also doesn’t require a lot of time or effort and it’s filling.
